South Huron Launches Municipal Climate Change Adaptation Plan Project

As front-line public service providers to Canadians, municipalities are uniquely positioned to lead planning that adapts communities to the impacts of a changing climate. The Municipality of South Huron has received funding from the Municipalities for Climate Innovation Program (MCIP) to prepare an adaptation strategy for our region that protects our assets and ensures long-term service continuity. The Municipality of South Huron has officially launched their Climate Change Adaptation Plan project. The goal of this two-year project is to increase the Municipality’s capacity to identify and respond to climate change impacts.

“Identifying risks and working to protect or extend the life of our core infrastructure is just smart business planning,” said Mayor George Finch. “South Huron Council has made adapting our municipality to the impacts of a changing climate a priority.”

A key component of the project will be discussions with internal and external stakeholders to capture all potential impacts and priority actions on a regional scale.

“Adapting to the reality of a changing climate is an experience that all municipalities are facing,” added Mayor Finch. “Our efforts to be resilient are all the more successful when communities work together to share information and resources, and that’s what we plan to do.”

This funding has allowed South Huron to hire a Climate Change Officer to lead the planning and implementation of the strategy, which will include on-going consultation with interested stakeholders and community members.
