Opening night at Huron Country Playhouse includes special tribute to local WW II Veteran

Posted on Friday June 28, 2019

On Thursday, June 27th, Drayton Entertainment debuted You'll Get Used To It! ...The War Show at The Huron Country Playhouse. This nostalgic musical celebration was developed to commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day and explores the joys and sorrows of war by following the journey of six Canadian infantrymen.

To the audience’s delight, 95 year old World War II Veteran Cpl Vera Armstrong was in attendance as a special guest of South Huron Mayor George Finch. Cpl Armstrong was introduced by Drayton Entertainment Artistic Director and CEO Alex Mustakas and she received arousing round of applause from the audience. Cpl Vera Armstrong of Exeter served with the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1942 to 1945 as a “Wireless Operator” helping to protect our borders in Control Towers at strategic locations across Canada from Vancouver to Montreal and later working at the Centralia base. She returned to active duty again from 1952 to 1954.

Written by Peter Colley, this theatre production runs from June 27th to July 13th at the Huron Country Playhouse in Grand Bend. With a mixture of side-splitting comedy and heart-wrenching tragedy, the essence of World War II is captured through the eyes of Canadian soldiers themselves as they experience everything from training and the anguish of leaving loved ones, to the anticipation of actually going to fight the enemy, the fear and danger of battle, and the sorrow of losing comrades. This moving theatrical production brings history alive, featuring popular music from the 1930s and 1940s including "The White Cliffs of Dover," "We'll Meet Again," "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square," "I'll Be Seeing You," and many more hits of the era.
