About the Project
Main Street at the north end of Exeter, from Walper Street to the Ausable River bridge will undergo a full road reconstruction project.
Businesses along Main Street will remain open and two lanes of traffic will be maintained throughout the project.
Work involves the replacement of existing roadway, curbs, sidewalks, storm sewers, sanitary sewers and watermain, including upgrades such as sidewalk extensions and AODA compliant sidewalk ramps, as part of a Ministry of Transportation approved Connecting Link Project.
Huron County is partnering with the Municipality with traffic signal and intersection improvements, including a new right-turn lane for east bound traffic on Thames Road turning onto Main Street.
The construction project will be constructed in two phases in 2024, with the final layer of surface asphalt being placed in 2025.
Project Timeline
The first phase of the construction project is scheduled to begin in mid-April 2024 and is expected to be completed by August 2024.
- The first phase of the project is the full reconstruction of the east side of Main Street North (Ausable River bridge to Walper Street), with replacement of sanitary sewers, storm sewers, and installation of new curb, sidewalk, and base asphalt. Traffic will be shifted to the west side of Main Street during this phase.
The second phase of the construction project is scheduled to begin immediately after completion of phase 1 and is expected to be completed prior to the end of 2024.
- The second phase of the project is the full reconstruction of the west side of Main Street North (Ausable River bridge to Walper Street), with replacement of watermain, and installation of new curb, sidewalk, and base asphalt. Traffic will be shifted to the east side of Main Street during this phase.
Like all construction projects, delays are likely during peak construction periods. The project team is committed to providing ongoing communication about the project to alleviate the impact of construction as much as possible.
