  • Stephen Township Arena Renewal Project

South Huron Recreation Centre

South Huron Recreation Centre (SHRC) Renewal Project (Phase 1)

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Reopening of the South Huron Recreation Centre on Monday September 19, 2022

After nearly 4 months of construction, we are excited to welcome you back to the South Huron Recreation Centre (SHRC) on Monday September 19th for ice usage.

What you need to know before you visit the South Huron Recreation Centre:

Navigating the facility

It is important to note that although the SHRC will reopen on September 19th, there may be construction activities ongoing within the facility as contractors work on outstanding items and the next components of the project. Please follow posted signage at the facility to ensure the safety of both patrons and workers.

Temporary Entrance

 

Patrons are to use the east entrance only to enter and exit the facility. Signage will be posted at the facility to direct patrons to the east side of the building. The west entrance is temporarily closed and usage is not permitted at any time.

Parking

 

Parking is available on the east and north side of the facility, with limited parking on the west due to the temporary construction area. There is currently one designated accessible parking space at the east side of the facility, adjacent to the temporary entrance. Outside of daytime Monday to Friday, overflow parking may be available along Victoria Street East.

Ice Usage

Ice usage resumed on Monday September 19, 2022

Trophy Display and Information Boards

We will be working with all groups over the next few months to identify a coordinated plan moving forward for the display of trophies and information boards in the facility. Stay tuned!

Hall Rentals

It is anticipated that the hall and kitchen will reopen for rentals to the public on November 1, 2022.

Construction of Zone 2 (new dressing room addition)

Work related to the construction of the new dressing room addition will continue into the fall of 2022. The temporary construction area on the west side of the SHRC will remain in place until project completion. There will be no impact to ice users inside the facility during this period.  

Project Background 

At the Regular Council meeting on June 7, 2021, Council approved a renovation and retrofit of the South Huron Recreation Centre (SHRC) that will help promote and sustain multi-generational programs and services at the facility (See the news release June 9, 2021: Council Greenlights SHRC Project)

Project Scope

The Municipality has undertaken a review of the facility and is proposing a renovation and retrofit that will include two phases. 

The first phase, scheduled for construction in 2022, will enhance ice user experiences, increase comfort and optimal viewing for patrons, while improving the overall accessibility within the main areas of the facility.

The first phase (as approved) includes the following general parameters:

  • Dressing room addition consisting of 6 new dressing rooms, 1 officials’ room, 1 mechanical and electrical room and a connecting corridor. Note: the existing dressing rooms will be repurposed in their current footprint based on future consultation and the existing officials' room will remain unchanged to accommodate request for use.
  • New dasher board and netting system
  • Expansion of existing warm room to open concept lobby
  • Front entrance improvements
  • Incorporation of existing offices and entrances
  • Addition of two universal washrooms and viewing platform that meet AODA standards
  • Site development 

The total allocated construction budget for the above components is $4,500,000 plus HST.

Stephen Township Arena

Stephen Township Arena Renewal Project

Project Background 

At the Regular Council meeting on February 16, 2021, Council passed motion #039-2021 "That the Stephen Arena remain open and continue to operate as an arena". This work is necessary to continue operations at the Stephen Arena. This project will diversify the facility to meet future program demand.

Project Scope

It was identified that significant work is needed to continue operations at the arena, while diversifying the facility to meet future program demands. 

The capital upgrades scheduled for construction in 2022 were included in the approved budget and includes the following general parameters:

  • Rink slab replacement and components (existing sand floor to concrete)
  • Replacement of dasher boards and glass
  • Front entrance improvements to meet AODA standards

The total amount approved by Council for the Stephen Township Arena Renewal project for the above components is $2,000,000.
