Council advocates for South Huron at ROMA conference

Feedback

Earlier this week, the Mayor and members of Council met with provincial government officials to discuss South Huron’s priorities at the Rural Ontario Municipal Association conference in Toronto.

“The South Huron team delivered several briefings to key ministries highlighting our local priorities including the need for a new recreation centre,” said Mayor George Finch. “It was a productive conference and I’m once again pleased with our delegation’s performance.”

The South Huron delegation discussed the following issues with the province:

  • The Honourable Sylvia Jones, Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services. The discussion focused on the need to maintain an appropriate and responsible OPP presence in South Huron should the OPP Office in Exeter close.
  • Mr. Stephen Crawford, Parliamentary Assistant, Ministry of Infrastructure. The discussion focused on the project to build a new South Huron recreation centre and the need for financial support from senior governments.
  • Mr. Stan Cho, Parliamentary Assistant, Ministry of Finance. The discussion focused on the local infrastructure deficit and the need to explore new revenue tools for small municipalities like South Huron.
  • Mr. Sheref Sabawy, Parliamentary Assistant, Ministry of Heritage, Tourism, Culture and Sport. The discussion focused on the project to build a new South Huron recreation centre and the need for financial support from senior governments.

Informal discussions occurred with the Ministry of Transportation where the Mayor expressed his concerns about the safety of the intersection of highways #21 and #83. An inquiry was also placed with representatives from Enbridge about the possibility of expanding the supply of natural gas within South Huron.

South Huron, with its low taxes and servicing costs, is an ideal place to visit, live and do business. Some of our key assets include:

  • Shovel-ready commercial and industrial development lands
  • Unconstrained access to potable water through Lake Huron Water Supply system
  • Abundant wastewater capacity adjacent to industrial and residential lands
  • a vibrant commercial core on the Main Street of Exeter
  • Thriving tourism economy along Ontario’s West Coast
  • Growing service economy due to expanding residential base
