Meet Our Youth Engagement Strategist

Feedback

Hi there! My name is Vanessa Culbert and I am working on a special four month project for the Municipality of South Huron to engage youth in community building.Vanessa Culbert

I grew up in Owen Sound, and my family now lives outside of Paisley. While I am not a native to Huron County, I spent two years living in Goderich, working as a newscaster/reporter at Country 104.9. I have a diploma in Broadcast Journalism and a Graduate Certificate in Public Relations-Corporate Communications, both from Fanshawe College.

At 23 years old, I understand the barriers to community inclusion that youth can face while living in a rural area such as Huron County. Growing up, I felt there was an unfortunate disconnect between youth and the “decision makers”. Youth need to be consulted on decisions, especially decisions that directly impact the youth community.

I believe youth are our future. We need to create an environment where they can grow and feel comfortable voicing their ideas and opinions on municipal matters. That’s where I’m trying to help.

My job is to ensure the youth voice is being heard. The Municipality does not have a set vision of how this project will proceed; it is up to youth to voice their opinions and identify the outcomes they desire.

Based on community input, Thrive South Huron will develop a strategy outlining opportunities for the youth of South Huron to help shape the future of our communities. I have so many exciting plans for this summer to get our youth engaged in conversations and action planning! You can follow along on our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram @SouthHuron and using the hashtag #SouthHuronYouth.

Right now, we’re launched a short survey so you can have your say on how to make South Huron a youth friendly community: https://forms.southhuron.ca/Youth-Engagement-Strategy
