South Huron seeks partnerships to build new multi-use recreation facility

The Municipality of South Huron is seeking a partnership with the provincial and federal governments to build a new multi-use recreation centre. The Municipality is applying to the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) to build a modern energy-efficient, cost-effective and standards-compliant centre that would replace the current aging facility in the Community of Exeter.

“South Huron Council is committed to providing the best recreational opportunities that are accessible, benefit all age groups and abilities, and are affordable to the taxpayers of the entire community for decades to come,” said Mayor George Finch.

This is a grant application only at this time and it is expected to be a very competitive process with many Municipalities across Ontario seeking funding. The public consultation work completed by the Hub/Rec Centre Project Steering Committee in 2018/19 has enabled the Municipality to move forward with a competitive grant application that proposes a 50/50 cost-sharing agreement between the local community/municipality and senior levels of government. The total cost of the proposed project is estimated to be approximately $25 million.

“I want to thank again the members of the former Hub/Rec Centre Project Steering Committee,” said Mayor Finch. “The information they collected during an extensive public consultation process helped to inform Council’s decisions on this project.”

The Municipality has launched a web page called South Huron Recreation Centre Project that provides information about this proposed initiative and details about the funding application. The page will be updated as new information is received and the community will be notified through the municipality’s social media accounts (@southhuron) and The Hub section of the newspaper.

Individuals requiring information in alternative formats are encouraged to contact the Municipality by phone (519.235.0310), email (info@southhuron.ca) or in person at Town Hall (322 Main Street, Exeter).
