Tire Recycling Program temporarily paused at South Huron Landfill
Municipality has stopped accepting used tires until provincial tire recycling market backlog is addressed
The tire recycling program at the South Huron Landfill has been temporarily paused as capacity for used tires has been reached.
Ontario’s tire recycling system operates within the framework governed by the Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act, 2016 and Tires Regulation (O. Reg. 225/18). Under these regulations, companies that supply tires into the Ontario market are legally and financially responsible for managing their disposal after use by consumers. On January 1, 2025, the Government of Ontario changed the tire recycling target for suppliers from 85% of the tires marketed into Ontario to 65%.
Since the change came into effect, there has been a growing province-wide tire collection backlog. South Huron has been unable to find tire haulers to pick up at our facility and the Municipality has no other options to recycle tires at this time. To prevent unnecessary costs to municipal rate payers, South Huron will stop collecting used tires until a solution can be found or the province addresses this regulatory issue.
South Huron is advising our landfill customers to contact the supplier where they purchased their tires to inquire about dropping off used tires for recycling.
