As a result of annual seasonal recruitment, our Community Services Department is seeking to fill the roles of Seasonal Labourer – Summer Operations. Under the direction of the Foreperson of Community Services, this position is responsible for providing facility maintenance on municipal property and facilities. Responsible for all areas of municipal facilities including arenas, community halls, open spaces, parks and trails, playing fields, municipal cemeteries and Port Blake Day park. Provides assistance to the public in a friendly and professional manner while promoting the health and safety of colleagues and the public.

This position is a seasonal position that provides a great opportunity for high school and post-secondary students on their summer break.

The Ideal Candidate  

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced professional that has the following:

  • Previous exposure to buildings, parks, playfields and cemetery operations and/or maintenance is considered an asset
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to deal with the public with diplomacy and tact
  • Ability to adhere to Municipal policies and procedures required to effectively deliver programs and services
  • Effective inter-personal, management, and written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong organization skills to effectively complete/deliver and prioritize assigned tasks and responsibilities within established timelines.
  • Works effectively as a member of a team
  • Ability to follow through with assigned tasks, to ask questions and ensure that the tasks are completed in an effective, timely and efficient manner, based on policy and Supervisory direction.

Working Conditions

Work involves a substantial amount of heavy lifting upwards of 40 lbs., carrying, crawling and climbing. Operations are conducted primarily outdoors and continue in all weather. A high degree of mental alertness is required to ensure the safety of self and others as working with equipment, vehicles, unpredictable traffic conditions, and tools is required. A flexible schedule is required to account for operational coverage outside of core hours, including weekends, overtime or call-in shifts.

As a result of annual seasonal recruitment, our Community Services Department is seeking to fill the roles of Pool Lifeguard / Swim Instructor. As a Lifeguard / Swim Instructor your duty is to provide pool supervision to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment. Lifeguards / Swim Instructors must be capable of providing first aid treatment where necessary. You will be responsible for the overall safety of a variety of swimmers utilizing the Exeter and Kirkton-Woodham pool facilities. Lifeguards / Swim Instructors must have the ability to effectively and efficiently protect the safety of swimmers. Other responsibilities include maintenance of the pool areas to ensure safety and ease of use. Applicants must have all appropriate certifications, including Bronze Cross designation, or National Lifeguard Certification and Standard First Aid with CPR & AED Level C.

The Ideal Candidate  

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced professional that has the following:

  • Current Standard First Aid with CPR & AED Level C.
  • Current National Lifeguard Certificate.
  • Bronze Cross Certificate is required at a minimum to be considered for this role.
  • Current Swim Instructor Certificate is considered an asset.
  • Effective verbal, listening and communication skills
  • Effective public relations skills
  • Effective stress and time management skills
  • Possess cultural awareness and sensitivity

Hours of work are scheduled within the core operating hours of the Exeter and Kirkton-Woodham pool facilities and Exeter Wading pool facility Monday through Sunday.

As a Wading Pool Attendant you will be required to provide pool supervision to ensure a safe, enjoyable environment and provide first aid treatment when necessary. The Wading Pool Attendant is responsible for supervision, accident prevention, public education and public relations to those using the pools. Monitors and controls access to the wading pool. Must have the ability to protect the safety of swimmers effectively and efficiently. Other responsibilities include keeping the wading pool clean and clear of debris to ensure safety and ease of use.

The Municipality of South Huron invites applications for Volunteer Firefighters for the Exeter and Dashwood Fire Stations. Being a volunteer firefighter can be both rewarding and challenging, requiring you to dedicate time to respond to emergency calls and to commit to many hours of training. South Huron’s Emergency Services currently provides fire protection services from fire stations located in the communities of Exeter and Dashwood.  

Key Duties and Responsibilities as a Volunteer Firefighter

Performs fire ground operation and rescue operations within the South Huron Emergency Services Department incident management system so that lives are protected and property loss and damage to the environment is minimized.

  • Recognizes hazards to prevent injuries to patients or rescuers
  • Secures water supplies
  • Advances hose lines
  • Operates portable pumps
  • Performs search and rescue operations
  • Carries, positions and raises ground ladders
  • Ventilates structures
  • Extinguishes vehicle, structural and ground fires
  • Overhauls fire areas
  • Performs vehicle extrication
  • Secures area of structural collapse
  • Performs industrial rescue
  • Provides emergency patient care and responds to incidents as a first responder
  • Performs other duties as assigned

The Ideal Volunteer Firefighter  

We are seeking highly motivated members of the community that:

  • Are a resident of South Huron, living and/or working within 8kms of either the Exeter or Dashwood Fire Stations
  • Have a valid Driver’s G Class License
  • Have good reading, writing and record keeping skills
  • Have reliable means of transportation to respond to alarms
  • Have excellent interpersonal skills complimented by being motivated, eager to learn and grow, not afraid to take on new responsibilities and work independently
  • Are able to work effectively as a team
  • Are mentally and physically fit to complete this the duties listed

Conditions of Engagement

Those successful in becoming a Volunteer Firefighter will be required to obtain the following during their engagement:

  • NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level I and II Certifications as well as NFPA 1072 HAZMAT Operations
  • First Aid, CPR and AED Certification
  • Criminal Records Check and Vulnerable Sector Check (including check of the Pardoned Sexual Offender Database)
  • Medical certificate verifying your ability to perform the essential duties of the volunteer role
  • Ministry of Transportation driver’s abstract
