Our Building and Planning Department is seeking to fill the role of Planning Coordinator for a one-year, full-time contract for the purpose of covering a parental leave. Under the direction of the Director of Building and Planning / Chief Building Official, the Planning Coordinator administers, tracks and coordinates the technical review of applications pertaining to planning, land use and development. Within this role you will work closely with the County Planner to assist with municipal planning applications, public notices and public signage ensuring they are distributed within legislated timelines. This position responds to planning inquiries, and coordinates the planning review processes on development within South Huron.

The Ideal Candidate

·         We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced professional that is willing to obtain or has the following:

  • Completion of a post-secondary program in land use / urban and rural planning or an equivalent program.
  • Member of the Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI) is considered an asset.
  • Designation as a Registered Professional Planner (RPP) is considered an asset
  • Minimum of 1-3 years’ experience in an office environment
  • Knowledge of MS Office, Excel, Land Manager, Cloud Permit, GIS software and other Land Use Planning software; experience with database applications and records management procedures.
  • Proficient knowledge of the Planning Act, provincial planning policies and regulations.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to deal with the public with diplomacy and tact.
  • Strong organizational skills to ensure that the tasks are completed in a timely and efficient manner to meet legislative and Council established service levels and deadlines.
  • Ability to read and understand maps, legal surveys, development plans and site plans.

Working Conditions:

Work occurs in an in-office environment with a high degree of public contact, as well as exposure to highly sensitive and confidential issues, which may be of a personal nature. This position requires long periods of sitting, as well as consistent visual concentration upon computer screens. Occasional lifting of boxes is required. Hours of work are scheduled within the core operating hours of 8:30 A.M. – 4:30 P.M., Monday through Friday. Occasional overtime may be required to deal with peak periods. Attendance at after-hours meetings and special events will be required from time to time.

Our Environmental Services Department is seeking to fill the role of Operator in Training. The Operator in Training assists in the day-to-day operations for water and wastewater services in an effective, efficient, safe and environmentally responsible manner. Monitors compliance with provincial and federal regulations and maintains necessary records. Provides water and wastewater system maintenance to the collection, and distribution systems as necessary, under the direction of the Environmental Services Foreperson. 

This position also assists in the day-to-day operations for landfill services, including performing landfill site regulatory checks and assisting in monitoring compliance with Provincial Regulations, Landfill Operations Manual and Environmental Compliance Approval. 

This is a learning focused position intended to provide hands-on experience and develop job-relevant skills in municipal water and wastewater operations including safe work practices, routine operational support and regulatory awareness. The experience is designed to support career development and help prepare an individual to compete for future Water / Wastewater Operator opportunities. 

The Ideal Candidate

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced professional that has or is able to obtain the following:

  • Completion of Grade 12 in Ontario or equivalent
  • Shall obtain within the ninety (90) day probationary period, MECP Operator in Training Certifications for Water Distribution, Wastewater Treatment and Wastewater Collection, in accordance with O.Reg. 128/04 and O.Reg. 129/04
  • Shall within one year of appointment to this position, pass the MECP exams for Operator Certification for Water Distribution Class I, Wastewater Treatment Class I and Wastewater Collection Class I
  • Working knowledge of water, wastewater construction and maintenance processes, as well as temporary traffic control
  • Has or is able to obtain Water Meter Installation certificate
  • Standard First Aid/CPR Level C, WHMIS and Confined Space Entry (CSE) certifications
  • Valid ‘G’ Driver’s License with a clean drivers abstract, a ‘DZ’ Driver’s License is considered an asset
  • Working knowledge of standard office software, work order software and specialized software (SCADA)
  • Works effectively as a team member

·    Working Conditions

Work involves a substantial amount of heavy lifting, carrying, crawling and climbing. Operations continue in all weather, including severe conditions such as freezing roads, blizzards and white outs with poor visibility, slippery conditions and confined spaces. Regular work in environmental hazardous conditions.  A high degree of mental alertness is required to ensure the safety of self and others as working with heavy equipment, vehicles, unpredictable traffic conditions, tools and hazardous chemicals is required. A flexible schedule is required to account for operational coverage outside of core hours, including emergencies, holidays, weekends and on-call shifts. Attending all staff meetings and other meetings as required.

The Municipality of South Huron invites applications for Volunteer Firefighters for the Exeter and Dashwood Fire Stations. Being a volunteer firefighter can be both rewarding and challenging, requiring you to dedicate time to respond to emergency calls and to commit to many hours of training. South Huron’s Emergency Services currently provides fire protection services from fire stations located in the communities of Exeter and Dashwood.  

Key Duties and Responsibilities as a Volunteer Firefighter

Performs fire ground operation and rescue operations within the South Huron Emergency Services Department incident management system so that lives are protected and property loss and damage to the environment is minimized.

  • Recognizes hazards to prevent injuries to patients or rescuers
  • Secures water supplies
  • Advances hose lines
  • Operates portable pumps
  • Performs search and rescue operations
  • Carries, positions and raises ground ladders
  • Ventilates structures
  • Extinguishes vehicle, structural and ground fires
  • Overhauls fire areas
  • Performs vehicle extrication
  • Secures area of structural collapse
  • Performs industrial rescue
  • Provides emergency patient care and responds to incidents as a first responder
  • Performs other duties as assigned

The Ideal Volunteer Firefighter  

We are seeking highly motivated members of the community that:

  • Are a resident of South Huron, living and/or working within 8kms of either the Exeter or Dashwood Fire Stations
  • Have a valid Driver’s G Class License
  • Have good reading, writing and record keeping skills
  • Have reliable means of transportation to respond to alarms
  • Have excellent interpersonal skills complimented by being motivated, eager to learn and grow, not afraid to take on new responsibilities and work independently
  • Are able to work effectively as a team
  • Are mentally and physically fit to complete this the duties listed

Conditions of Engagement

Those successful in becoming a Volunteer Firefighter will be required to obtain the following during their engagement:

  • NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level I and II Certifications as well as NFPA 1072 HAZMAT Operations
  • First Aid, CPR and AED Certification
  • Criminal Records Check and Vulnerable Sector Check (including check of the Pardoned Sexual Offender Database)
  • Medical certificate verifying your ability to perform the essential duties of the volunteer role
  • Ministry of Transportation driver’s abstract
