The Municipality of South Huron invites applications for the position of Crossing Guard. The responsibility of the Crossing Guard is to provide for the safe movement of children to and from school when crossing public roadways and intersections by observing gaps in the traffic and leading the children across the roadway or intersection. This position involves alerting drivers to stop for the safe crossing of children and signaling for the traffic to go when appropriate.
Responsibilities Include:
- Assist children on their way to and from school by safely crossing roadways and intersections.
- Watch for gaps in traffic and walk children across roadway or intersection while holding a “stop” sign in such a manner as to be visible to approaching vehicles.
- Provide Crossing Guard duties in all weather conditions while school is open.
- Communicate traffic and crossing rules and other information to students and adults and promote understanding of road safety.
- Record license numbers of vehicles disregarding traffic signals, and report infractions to appropriate authorities.
- Advise the Municipality of any hazardous work conditions affecting the work location and safety of children.
- Maintain the Municipally provided safety equipment.
The ideal candidate should have or is able to obtain:
- Minimum Grade 12 secondary education
- Ability to obtain a Vulnerable Sector Check deemed satisfactory by the municipality.
- Previous experience working with children would be considered an asset.
- Ability to deal effectively and courteously with the children and general public.
- Visual and hearing ability to recognize traffic from a safe distance (300 feet)
- Ability to hold a “stop” sign for extended periods of time
- Work effectively as a member of a team.
Working conditions:
Work occurs outdoors and involves continuous standing, walking, stepping down from and up to street curbs while holding “stop” sign and performing physical hand and arm movements to direct pedestrians. Operations continue in all weather, including severe conditions such as freezing roads, blizzards and white outs with poor visibility and slippery conditions. A high degree of mental alertness is required to ensure the safety of self and others as a high degree of exposure to vehicle traffic and other potential hazards is required. Hours of work are 3 hours per day in 1.5-hour intervals, totaling 15 hours per week.
Hourly Range: $19.57 to $23.03.
