The Municipality of South Huron invites applications for the position of Crossing Guard. The responsibility of the Crossing Guard is to provide for the safe movement of children to and from school when crossing public roadways and intersections by observing gaps in the traffic and leading the children across the roadway or intersection. This position involves alerting drivers to stop for the safe crossing of children and signaling for the traffic to go when appropriate.

Responsibilities Include:

  •  Assist children on their way to and from school by safely crossing roadways and intersections.
  • Watch for gaps in traffic and walk children across roadway or intersection while holding a “stop” sign in such a manner as to be visible to approaching vehicles.
  • Provide Crossing Guard duties in all weather conditions while school is open. 
  • Communicate traffic and crossing rules and other information to students and adults and promote understanding of road safety.
  • Record license numbers of vehicles disregarding traffic signals, and report infractions to appropriate authorities. 
  • Advise the Municipality of any hazardous work conditions affecting the work location and safety of children. 
  • Maintain the Municipally provided safety equipment.  

The ideal candidate should have or is able to obtain:

  • Minimum Grade 12 secondary education 
  • Ability to obtain a Vulnerable Sector Check deemed satisfactory by the municipality.
  • Previous experience working with children would be considered an asset.
  • Ability to deal effectively and courteously with the children and general public.
  • Visual and hearing ability to recognize traffic from a safe distance (300 feet)
  • Ability to hold a “stop” sign for extended periods of time
  • Work effectively as a member of a team. 

Working conditions: 

Work occurs outdoors and involves continuous standing, walking, stepping down from and up to street curbs while holding “stop” sign and performing physical hand and arm movements to direct pedestrians. Operations continue in all weather, including severe conditions such as freezing roads, blizzards and white outs with poor visibility and slippery conditions. A high degree of mental alertness is required to ensure the safety of self and others as a high degree of exposure to vehicle traffic and other potential hazards is required. Hours of work are 3 hours per day in 1.5-hour intervals, totaling 15 hours per week.

Hourly Range: $19.57 to $23.03.

The Municipality of South Huron invites applications for the position of Seasonal Labourers – Winter Operations. Under the direction of the Foreperson of Community Services, this position assists in the day-to-day operations of the Community Services department in an effective, efficient, safe and environmentally responsible manner. This position will monitor municipal facilities including arenas, community halls, open spaces, parks and trails, and playing fields to provide maintenance support, maintain necessary records, and support Facility Operators as requested. Provides assistance to the public in and friendly and professional manner while promoting the health and safety of colleagues and the public.

This position is a seasonal position that provides a great opportunity for high school and post-secondary students.

Aspects of the ideal candidate include:
• Previous exposure to buildings, parks, playfields, and cemetery operations and/or maintenance is considered an asset.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
• Ability to deal with the public with diplomacy and tact
• Ability to adhere to Municipal policies and procedures required to effectively deliver programs and services
• Effective inter-personal, management and written and oral communication skills.
• Strong organizational skills to effectively complete/deliver and prioritize assigned tasks and responsibilities within established timelines
• Works effectively as a member of a team
• Ability to follow through with assigned tasks, to ask questions and ensure that the tasks are completed in an effective, timely and efficient manner, based on policy and Supervisory direction.

Working conditions:
Work involves a substantial amount of heavy lifting, carrying, crawling and climbing. Operations continue in all weather. A high degree of mental alertness is required to ensure the safety of self and others as working with equipment, vehicles, unpredictable traffic conditions, and tools is required. A flexible schedule is required to account for operational coverage outside of core hours, including weekends, overtime or call-in shifts.

Hourly Range: $19.57 to $23.03.

The Municipality of South Huron invites applications for the seasonal part-time position of Facilities Operator. Under the direction of the Foreman of Community Services, provides facility maintenance and supervision of municipal property and facilities. Responsible for the care, maintenance, and day-to-day operations of municipal facilities including arenas, community centres, fire halls, parks, playgrounds, pavilions, sports fields and cemeteries. Maintenance activities include plumbing, electrical, carpentry, masonry, painting and mechanical. Completes daily, weekly and annual maintenance activities and inspections to facilities, equipment and play spaces.

The ideal candidate should have or is able to obtain:
• Completion of Secondary School, preferably with a background in trades and occupations.
• Certification or ability to become certified as Facilities Operator, Ice Technician, or Basic Refrigeration or Horticultural Technician.
• First Aid, CPR, AED, WHMIS and propane handling certification.
• Exposure to building, parks, playfield and cemeteries maintenance.
• A working knowledge of basic building construction and maintenance, including electrical, plumbing , HVAC and refrigeration
• Background experience in technical skills in ice making and resurfacing, refrigeration and grounds’ keeping
• Maintain a valid Class G license.
• Ability to obtain criminal reference/vulnerable sector check deemed appropriate by the Municipality.

Working conditions:
Work involves a substantial amount of heavy lifting, carrying, crawling, and climbing. Operations continue in all weather, including severe conditions. A high degree of mental alertness is required to ensure the safety of self and others as working with heavy equipment, vehicles, unpredictable traffic conditions, tools and hazardous chemicals is required. Hours of work are scheduled based on operational requirements by a rotation shift including days, evenings, and weekends. A flexible schedule is required to account for operation coverage outside of core hours, including emergencies, holidays, weekends, and seasonal shifts.

Hourly Range: $31.56 - $37.12.
