Our Environmental Services Department is seeking to fill the role of Environmental Services Student Labourer. Under the direction of the Foreperson of Environmental Services, this position assists in the day-to-day operations for Environmental Services in an effective, efficient, safe and environmentally responsible manner. This position will involve, fire hydrant maintenance (painting and greasing hydrants), periodic maintenance under the direct supervision of the Environmental Service Foreperson or a Water/Wastewater Operator that may include; valve operation, sewer main flushing and water distribution repairs. This position will also include landscaping maintenance at South Huron’s Landfills, covered under the department of Environmental Services. Introductions to monitoring and compliance in accordance with provincial and federal regulations and maintain necessary records.
This position is geared towards students in high-school looking to gain willful employment and who want to further their knowledge in municipal clean drinking water and wastewater operations.
The Ideal Candidate
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced professional that has the following:
Knowledge of MECP (Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks) Regulations or wiliness to learn, as well as provincial occupational health and safety standards and labour laws.
- Effective inter-personal, written and oral communication skills
- Strong organization skill sot effectively complete/deliver and prioritize assigned tasks and responsibilities within established timelines
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and productive working relationships
- Ability to communicate with the public in a tactful and courteous manner.
- Valid G Class Driver’s License with a driver’s abstract deemed satisfactory by the Municipality.

· Working Conditions
Work involves a substantial amount of heavy lifting, carrying, crawling and climbing. Operations continue in all weather, including severe conditions such as freezing roads, blizzards and white outs with poor visibility, slippery conditions and extreme heat. Regular work in environmental hazardous conditions (ie. wastewater treatment plant, and sewage pumping stations). A high degree of mental alertness is required to ensure the safety of self and others as working with heavy equipment, vehicles, unpredictable traffic conditions, tools and hazardous chemicals is required. Hours of work are scheduled within the core operating hours of 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday. After hours call in and overtime may be requested during emergencies.
